Traditional Acupuncture

What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a traditional form of medicine which originated in China. As an organized system, it has been in existence for around 2,500 years and as practiced by Traditional Acupuncturists, its core principles remain largely unchanged.

Simply stated, Acupuncture is the practice of needling specific points on the body in order to resolve disease and create health.

Chinese medical theory details an intricate understanding of the human being in health and illness and in particular charts the way in which a person’s physiology interacts with their emotional life and their environment to create their experience of being alive. The diagnostic insights at the heart of Chinese Medicine allow an Acupuncturist to isolate the causes of any imbalance within a person to one or a series of organs within the body. The functioning of those imbalanced organs, which are responsible for that person’s unique experience of both their mind and their body, can then be influenced and rectified by needling the appropriate Acupuncture points.

Each of the 365 main Acupuncture points has a unique capacity to influence the activities of the visceral organs of the body and in turn the areas of emotional life which those organs affect and are affected by. The overall view of treatment is to address a patient’s imbalance at its root, and to strengthen their constitution so they become healthier, happier, and more able to function effectively in all areas of their life.

What happens in an Acupuncture treatment?

At the initial consultation, which lasts 1.5 hours, treatment proceeds from the diagnosis arrived at by your practitioner. This diagnosis is made from a detailed analysis of how you and your body are working. Treatment involves the insertion of very fine needles into various areas of the body which harmonize the function of the internal organs and promote or sedate the flow of energy within your body.

Many patients find treatment to be deeply relaxing and will often leave feeling calm, peaceful, and in many cases more energized. Sterile, single use, disposable needles are used which ensures the highest levels of hygiene and safety. After the initial consultation, patients will often attend for a series of follow up treatments the number and frequency of which will depend upon the patient and their condition.
